Reviews:
Primo is indeed a primer in Latin music, with classics from the books of Machito, Tito Rodriguez, Joe Cuba, and others reinterpreted in an all-star setting. The esteem in which vibist Cal Tjader was held for his innovations in the idiom is obvious from the spirited writing and keyboard contributions of Charlie Palmieri, and the equally joyous writing and (on Mario Bauza's immortal "Tanga") timbales of Tito Puente. Tjader left many examples of his Latin jazz concepts; this collection, which now includes a bonus alternate version of "Bang Bang," is one of the most vital. (La Coleccion)

Reviews
When Cal Tjader recorded RITMO CALIENTE in 1954, he was already established as a respected Latin jazzman, enjoying popularity as a vibes player rivaling that of Red Norvo. However RITMO CALIENTE and its follow-up, MAS RITMO CALIENTE (the two albums are presented here on one CD), secured Tjader's position in jazz history as one of the finest fusion artists. The emphasis here may be on rhythm, but Tjader and his band's skillful phrasing are striking.

The Latin craze was in full swing in the States, with Desi Arnaz and Tito Puente both on the charts. But Tjader's music was on an entirely different plane. His music was high art, incorporating Latin percussion to create subtle, atmospheric rhythms.

His artistry, together with the jazz experiments of such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Charles Mingus, brought jazz fusion to public attention. These recordings paved the way for the future fusion experiments of such artists as Miles Davis and Carlos Santana.

Tracks 1-13 originally released as RITMO CALIENTE on Fantasy (3216), and tracks 14-23 on MAS RITMO CALIENTE on Fantasy (3262). Includes original release liner notes by Ralph J. Gleason.

Anita O'Day & Cal Tjader - Time For 2

I'm Not Supposed To Be Blue Blues.

Concerts In The Sun Review
One of the things that hardcore jazz collectors love to do is fantasize about all of the live recordings by major artists that have gone unreleased but may surface eventually -- performances that were taped and ended up in the private collection of an artist, promoter, club owner, manager, or soundboard person. Collectors are always hoping that a previously unreleased soundboard recording of a John Coltrane, Bud Powell, or Thelonious Monk gig will turn up somewhere, and in some cases, recordings that have gone unreleased for decades will see the light of day at some point. Take Concerts in the Sun, for example. This 2002 disc contains previously unreleased Cal Tjader performances from 1960 -- live recordings that stayed in the can for 42 years. Concerts in the Sun focuses on two different Tjader concerts, one at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in suburban Los Angeles on May 27, 1960, and the other at the Waikiki Shell in Honolulu on October 7 of that year. Fantasy's sequencing might seem odd; the label offers three Honolulu performances followed by three Santa Monica performances followed by three more Honolulu performances and, finally, one more Santa Monica performance. But there's a method to the madness. Instead of separating the recordings by venue, Fantasy separates them stylistically. So six non-Latin bebop offerings are followed by four examples of Tjader playing Afro-Cuban jazz with Mongo Santamaria, including "Afro Blue" and "Cubano Chant." In both areas, the vibist is pleasing; non-Latin versions of "Love for Sale" and Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye" are no less solid than the Afro-Cuban "Tumbao." Concerts in the Sun falls short of essential, but Tjader's hardcore fans will be thankful that these enjoyable recordings finally became commercially available after 42 years. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

CD Notes
CAL TJADER PLAYS/MARY STALLINGS SINGS is a noteworthy album in that it represents Mary Stallings's recording debut. Only 22 at the time, Stallings sings with a remarkable amount of conviction and control here, displaying the rich tone and heavy gospel influence that would mark all her work. Tjader leads a fine band through a set filled with standards and tunes by Fats Waller and Duke Ellington, and his cool-toned vibes add a shimmering atmosphere to the proceedings. ...
