Puerto Rico Heineken Jazz Fest - The Puerto Rico Heineken JazzFest, founded and produced by Luis A. Alvarez, is committed to the present and future development of Jazz in Puerto Rico. This effort is realized year after year with programs such as free concerts, musician forums with students, and seminars. All the energy expended by the producers and musicians involved with Puerto Rico Heineken JazzFest have culminated in the implementation of the Berklee on the Road seminar program.

Jammin' in the Bronx - A Live Concert Tribute to Machito

In October 1995, the employees of the Bronx-Lebanon Medical Center sponsored an all-star concert at the Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture. The resultant CD, besides being a fundraiser (for hospital equipment), documents a well-programmed concert of the highest quality Latin jazz.

High-energy big-band salsa is interspersed with an elegant Chucho Valdes ballad, an intriguing Dave Valenti solo flute piece, and a wonderfully controlled conga solo by Carlos "Patato" Valdez that plays with time, timbre, and the audience's expectations. The Machito Orchestra is as big, bold and brassy as ever; an unexpected delight is the smaller, very tight ensemble playing of the Papo Vasquez Latin Jazz Group. ~ Janet Rosen, All Music Guide
